“Why did the LORD do such terrible things to this land and to this temple? And the answer will be ‘Because his people abandoned the LORD their God who brought their ancestors out of Egypt and they worshipped other gods instead and bowed down to them. That is why the LORD has brought all of these disasters on them.” 1 Kings 9:8,9
We live in New Testament driven world. We don’t like to think that there are “ifs” in our New Testament World. I love the New Testament–I love the fact that Jesus does love me, but I also know that He loves me so much He is willing to correct me.
Romans 8:1 it says, “So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.”
In Hebrews 12: it says, “As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by his father? If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.”
I am thankful for God’s discipline in my life. I am thankful He cares so much about me that He is willing to do whatever it takes to continue on the journey He has for me, not what I have for me.
Some people confuse the discipline of God with condemnation. The discipline of God is meant to correct us, not condemn us. Take a look back at Romans 8:1. I am not condemned because I am in Christ, but He does discipline me.
Going back to 1 Kings 9:8,9, I can’t help but think, “It really is that simple.” If I abandon God, I invite God’s discipline. If I worship other idols, I invite God’s discipline.
Not all bad things though that happen is discipline towards you. Sometimes, it’s the fact that we live in a fallen world and we cannot control the actions of other situations or people. A question asked to me sometimes is, “Why did God not allow _____________ to live?” I am reminded of Isaiah 57:1,2 “Good people pass away; the godly often die before their time. But no one seems to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting them from the evil to come. For those who follow godly paths will rest in peace when they die.”
Could it be we are experiencing a downfall in our nation because we as believers have abandoned God? Have we worshiped idols and bowed down to them? We cannot blame it on those who do not know Christ–they don’t know better. Where is the church? Where is the believer in Christ who can do all things through Christ?
Something to think about……
