“Anyone who belongs to Christ is a new creation. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”
2 Corinthians 5:17
I witnessed this past week the transformation of people that were without hope. I traveled with my daughter, Hannah, and 47 other missionaries to bring Good News to Nuevo Laredo. I traveled with a missions organization based out of Tulsa, OK called Awe Star ministries.
We performed a drama called, “Freedom”. It depicts the story of the creation all the way to the resurrection of Christ sharing how Jesus came to free people from their sins through his death, burial, and resurrection.
Through this drama, the Holy Spirit began to thaw out the dark hearts of people who have been searching for hope and peace. There were dramatic instances of weeping as men, women, and children came to the realization that there was Someone that loved them–that gave up their life for them.
It was absolutely beautiful. Spiritual death was defeated by Life through Jesus. The landscape of Nuevo Laredo was barren and grey. The sadness written across the faces of people showed years of fear and lack of hope, but as these students and adults brought to life the pages of Scripture, the transformation was indescribable. The sullen faces that have faced fear due to the cartel were suddenly lit up by the power of the Gospel.
I have to admit, I go with Awe Star on these mission trips because each year, I need to be saved. Not saved spiritually, but saved from an American Christianity that says it’s all about me. I need to be saved from myself and get a taste of God’s grand story that He has invited me to be a part of. I get to see the joy of students who are able to lead their first person to Christ. I get to see the joy of Christian brothers and sisters as they encourage each other in the Word, Prayer, Fellowship, and Worship.
It’s quite the site and reminder that I am to come back to one of the hardest mission fields: the United States and the American church. It gives me the fuel and reminds me that what I do is worth it (1 Corinthians15:58). It reminds me that I am doing the right thing as a parent in raising up missionaries. It reminds me that the Lord’s return is very close and there will be a time that time will be up and there will be no more opportunity to share the Gospel, so now is the time to share the Good News.
If you would like to go with me, our next opportunity is Spring Break. Message me and I will give you the details or you can call my great friends at Awe Star. Go to http://www.awestar.org for more information.
